Cows looking over at The Pie Mill

Our History

The Pie Mill was born out of a need for a "proper" pie, instead of a casserole with a lid. Having been in the catering and hospitality industry for nearly twenty years, the Hodge family set about developing a range of handmade savoury pies. These pies have gone on to win a number of awards and The Pie Mill celebrated it's 10th year in business in May 2015. The pies are produced in a purpose built bakery by Amanda and her team, Kathryn, Sheila, Helen, Barry and Lesley who has worked with the family for nearly 16 years and is now bakery supervisor.

The pies are not only available to order from this website but can also be found the length and breadth of the country in farm shops, deli's, gastro pubs, butcher's and service stations, yes, service stations. Don't be surprised to find one of Amanda's pies at Tebay services on the M6. In fact you may also find more than a savoury pie, as the business has grown so has a wide range, which now includes fruit pies, cold pies, slices and quiches.

The Hodge family also run The Queens Head, Tirril where you'll find Jim and Margaret's name above the door and the pies on the menu and in the shop. The Pie Mill prides itself on being a family business who use the best local ingredients and make pastry onsite, and of course all the pies are still handmade.
